Americans Lose to Chiefs in Tournament FinaleSep 07, 2013 - 15:22 PDT
Kennewick, WA- After digging itself into an early hole, the Tri-City Americans (1-4-0-0, 2 pts) were never able to score that elusive go ahead goal, dropping the final game of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament 5-3 at the hands of the Spokane Chiefs (2-2-0-1, 5 pts).
Spokane jumped ahead right out of the gate, scoring on the game’s first shot by Tyler King just 27 seconds in. The Chiefs added another goal at the 8:05 mark to grab an early 2-0 lead.
Braden Purtill got the Americans back in the game with a power play goal at 14:20, swinging momentum back to Tri-City. With just 10 second remaining in the opening period, Mitch Topping added another power play goal for the Americans, knotting the game at two after 20 minutes.
Spokane regained its lead at 5:14 of the second period, but the Americans once again rallied to tie the game with Brian William’s fourth goal of the pre-season. For the third time in the game, the Chiefs broke the tie, this time for good, as Liam Stewart scored what would be the eventual game winning goal at 19:52 of the second period.
Tri-City had a few power play opportunities in the third period but were unable to get its offense going late in the game. Spokane added an insurance marker at 13:19 to seal the game for the Chiefs.
Evan Sarthou played the entire game for the Americans, making 16 saves on the night, while the Chiefs’ Eric Williams started the game for Spokane, steering aside 16 shots. Williams was relieved by Garrett Hughson at 11:39 of the second period, who made 8 saves for the Chiefs.
Spokane and Tri-City will wrap up its pre-season schedule against one other this week with a home-and-home. The Chiefs will host the Americans on Wednesday night, then the teams will return to the Toyota Center for the pre-season finale next Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
