Kennewick, WA – The Tri-City Americans, in partnership with Abadan and the Tri-Cities Cancer Center, are preparing to host the team’s inaugural Shaun Vey ‘Aware Down There’ Night as part of their 2013 ‘Mo’vember plans to raise awareness for male cancers this month.
A five-year WHL veteran, with nearly four of those years in Tri-City, Shaun was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer in February of 2013. After discovering an abnormality following a men’s league hockey game, Shaun’s wife, Robyn, encouraged him to go to the doctor. Following several tests, the diagnosis was confirmed and Shaun was treated. Now cancer-free, Shaun has become a strong voice for the need to increase awareness for male cancers, with his Relay For Life team in Saskatoon raising nearly $15,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society this summer.
“Listen up men! You have to check yourself. If you wait until you feel sick, it is most likely late stage, which limits treatment options,” explained Vey. “It is OK to talk about it. This is the message I want people to take away…men need to talk about this disease and I want to use my experience to help people and to raise awareness.”
On Friday, November 15 vs. the Regina Pats, the former Americans’ forward will return to the Toyota Center to help raise awareness for male cancers and funds for the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation. Shaun will take part in a special ceremonial puck drop, then will meet with fans on the concourse. While on the concourse, fans can take mustache-themed photos at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Photo Booth in exchange for a donation to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation, or purchase a raffle ticket for one of several great gift baskets, which will include autographed Americans’ memorabilia and game tickets. Additionally, fans looking to attend the game can purchase discounted tickets through the Tri-Cities Cancer Center office. Tickets purchased from the Tri-Cities Cancer Center office will have a portion of the ticket price donated back to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation by the Americans.

On Thursday, November 14, Shaun will be touring the Tri-Cities Cancer Center, located off W. Deschutes Ave. in Kennewick. Then, as an additional fundraiser for the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation, Shaun and several current Americans players will be visiting all three Mid-Columbia Papa John’s locations from 6:00-7:30pm. During that time, Papa John’s will donate 20% from all orders received, including online, by phone or in-store orders, to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation in support of Shaun Vey’s Aware Down There campaign.
“When I first found out about Shaun’s situation, I was stunned, given his young age,” said Dan Mulhausen, VP of Business Operations and Marketing Communications for the Tri-City Americans. “I wasn’t sure how to proceed, but I knew, as an organization, we had to help. We are proud of Shaun for being willing to push against convention by sharing his experiences and we are happy to provide him a platform in which to share his message.”
The November 15th game is proudly presented by Abadan, 97 Rock, KEPR-TV and the Tri-City Herald. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at the Toyota Center. About Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men between the ages of 15 and 35. It starts as an abnormal growth or tumor that develops in one or both testicles. It is a highly treatable type of cancer with a very good cure rate (about 95%) if found and treated early.
• 7,920 new cases of testicular cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2013.
• Because treatment is so successful, the risk of dying from this cancer is very low: about 1 in 5,000.
• 370 men will die from testicular cancer in 2013.
• A man's lifetime chance of having testicular cancer is about 1 in 270.
