Americans Trade Derek Ryckman to TigersSep 10, 2012 - 05:10 PDT
KENNEWICK, WA – Tri-City Americans Governor/General Manager Bob Tory announced today that the team has traded overage defenseman Derek Ryckman to the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a 5th round pick in the 2014 Bantam Draft.
Ryckman, a 6’4 205-pound blueliner from Red Deer, Alberta, was originally a 6th round (119th overall) selection by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 2007 Bantam Draft and was acquired by Tri-City last October. In 2011-12, Ryckman appeared in 60 games and, combined with his 11 games while still with Lethbridge, Ryckman totaled 3 goals, 12 points, 101 penalty minutes and was a plus-20. For his career, Ryckman has played in 227 WHL games, totaling 8 goals, 40 points, 293 penalty minutes and a plus-20 rating.
“With an overage problem, we needed to start getting closer to the WHL-mandated limit,” explained Tory. “This move allows Derek to stay in the WHL during his final season of junior hockey.”
“We would like to thank Derek for all he brought to our team last year,” Tory continued. “He is a great teammate and we wish him all the best in Medicine Hat.”
The move leaves Tri-City with five overage players still on the roster with the 2012 Pre-Season in full swing. The remaining 20-year-olds are Justin Feser, Patrick Holland, Jordan Messier, Jesse Mychan and Drydn Dow. However, Patrick Holland, who was signed by Montreal this past March, will be leaving for the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs’ training camp in late September. The Americans will need to be down to three overage players by mid-October.
After a busy weekend, the Americans will now head down the homestretch of the 2012 WHL Pre-Season. Tri-City will wrap-up the exhibition season with a doubleheader weekend, which kicks off on Friday, September 14. Before traveling to Kelowna for a match-up with the Rockets on Saturday, Tri-City will square off against the rival Spokane Chiefs on Friday at the Toyota Center. Game time is 7:05 p.m.. Tickets are available through all Ticketmaster outlets, the Toyota Center box office, all Fred Meyer outlets, or online at ticketmaster.com.
