Chiefs Beat Americans in Pre-Season Finale

Doug Love

Kennewick, WA- Despite holding a 38-29 edge in shots, the Tri-City Americans (2-6-0-0 4 pts) were unable to finish the pre-season on a high note, dropping Saturday’s contest 4-1 to the Spokane Chiefs (3-4-0-1 7 pts).

The game picked up right where the Americans and Chiefs left off on Wednesday, locking in a defensive battle early. But, by the late stages of the first period, the Americans grabbed momentum, outshooting Spokane 11-3 in the opening period, but unable to take an early lead.

Blaire Oneschuk opened the scoring early in the second, period stuffing a rebound past Troy Trombley to give the Chiefs the 1-0 advantage. Mitch Topping tied the game a few minutes later with power play goal at the 5:28 mark.  Matt Sozanski put the Chiefs back on top late in the period, for what would be the eventual game winning goal.

Tri-City had its chances to tie the game in the third period, but goals by Jason Fram and Liam Stewart ended the Americans’ hope of a late come back.

Tri-City managed one goal on 11 power plays in a night that saw teams combine for 127 minutes in penalties.

Trombley appeared in his sixth pre-season game on Saturday night, steering 25 shots aside. Spokane's Garrett Hughson faced 37 shots from the Americans, stopping all but one for 36 saves.

The Chiefs will return to Kennewick next weekend, when both teams open up the 2013-14 regular season at the Toyota Center Saturday night. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. where the Americans look to capture its fifth US Division Title in the past seven seasons.
