Late Scoring Lifts Thunderbirds Past Americans

John Allen

Kennewick, WA - With under three minutes remaining and a one-goal lead, the Tri-City Americans (1-3-0-0, 2 pts) seemed to be on its way to another victory on home ice. However, two late goals by the Seattle Thunderbirds (4-0-0-0, 8 pts) propelled itself past the Americans for a 3-2 victory Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Americans took full advantage of a Connor Honey penalty, capitalizing with a Ryan Chynoweth power play goal at 2:23 of the second period. Mike Sauer added a second goal for the Americans just 1:13 later to give Tri-City a 2-0 lead.

The Seattle Thunderbirds cut into the Americans lead with a power play goal of its own, scored by Mathew Barzal at the 8:01 mark. For the second consecutive night, Tri-City took a lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes.

The Americans held the 2-1 lead until the 17:22 mark of the third period, when Seth Swenson knotted the game for the Thunderbirds. Just when it looked as though the game was headed for overtime, Justin Hickman scored the winning goal for Seattle at 19:11 to give the Thunderbirds the 3-2 victory.

Troy Trombley got the start in goal for the Americans, playing all 60 minutes of the game making 33 saves on the night. The Thunderbirds split time between Danny Mumaugh and Justin Myles, making 15 and 12 saves respectively.

The Americans will be back in action tomorrow evening for the third and final day of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament. The day kicks-off with the Everett Silvertips taking on the Kootenay Ice at 11 a.m. followed by the Seattle Thunderbirds and Portland Winterhawks at 3 p.m. The Americans will headline the day with a 7 p.m. contest against the Spokane Chiefs.
