Tri-City Herald: Idle Americans earn third straight U.S. title

It took a day longer than the Tri-City Americans wanted, but they won their third straight U.S. Division title Sunday when the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Everett Silvertips 3-2.

"It would have been a much better feeling to have won it last night," said Americans captain Jarrett Toll, whose team lost a 5-4 game to the Chiefs on Saturday. "We are just happy we got the banner. But now we have to forget about that. The banner is nice, but we want to go further than that."

Chiefs' Win Hands Tri-City Third Division Title in Three Years

SPOKANE, WA - It doesn't happen very often but on Sunday night, the Tri-City Americans became the biggest Spokane Chiefs fans in the Western Hockey League.

With nothing to play for but pride, the Spokane Chiefs (45-22-3-2, 95 pts) knocked off the visiting Everett Silvertips (46-21-3-2, 97 pts) 3-2 in front of 9,204 fans at Veterans Memorial Arena. With just his fourth goal of the season, the game-winner came off the stick of Mitch Holmberg near the midway point of the third period, as James Reid and the rest of the Chiefs did the rest. The Chiefs remain locked into the #4-seed going into the playoffs and will take on Portland in the first round. Meanwhile, with the loss, Everett slipped back into third place in the Western Conference, despite being tied in points with Tri-City. The Silvertips will meet the #6-seed Kelowna Rockets in the first round.

Tri-City Herald: Chiefs deny Ams in home finale

On a night when they could have helped themselves to the U.S. Division title, the Tri-City Americans now will need a little help from the rival Spokane Chiefs to make it happen.

James Reid stopped 37 of 41 shots and Spokane took advantage of a 5-minute power play in the third period to hand the Americans a 5-4 loss Saturday night before a sold-out crowd of 6,053 at Toyota Center.

"We came out flat, couldn't capitalize on our power plays and couldn't win a face-off," said Tri-City captain Jarrett Toll. "If we could have played the whole game like the last 10 minutes, we would have won. Now, our biggest enemy becomes out best friend. Hopefully they come out on top of Everett."

Tri-City Drops Season Finale to Chiefs 5-4

KENNEWICK, WA - Just like a good novel, sports can keep you guessing up until the very last moment. Unfortunately for fans and readers, sometimes the story just doesn't come out quite the way you would like.

In the final game of the regular season and a chance to secure their third consecutive division banner, the Tri-City Americans (47-22-1-2, 97 pts) saw that reality turn into more of a hope, as the visiting Spokane Chiefs (44-22-3-2, 93 pts) outlasted their hosts 5-4 in front of a sold-out, season-high crowd of 6,053 fans at the Toyota Center. With the win, the Chiefs secure the #4-seed in the upcoming 2010 playoffs and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They also finish the regular season with an 8-4 record vs. their rivals to the south. Meanwhile, although on a bit of a sour note, Tri-City wraps up the regular season with a fourth consecutive season of 47+ wins and 90+ points.

Spokesman Review: Missed chance

On to Plan B.

Needing a win to keep alive hopes of finishing first in the Western Hockey League’s Western Conference, the Spokane Chiefs fell flat, dropping a 4-3 decision to rival Tri-City before a sold-out crowd of 10,528 at the Arena on Friday night.

Now, after failing to capitalize on the momentum of three straight wins, including an impressive 5-2 decision Tuesday, the Chiefs go to Tri-City tonight still trying to make sure they don’t fall to the No. 5 seed.

SPOKANE -- The Tri-City Americans had lost five straight to the Spokane Chiefs, but Friday night they won the one that mattered most.

Jordan Messier scored the game-winner with 7:37 left in the game as the Americans kept their hopes alive for a third straight U.S. Division title, beating the Chiefs 4-3 before a crowd of 10,528 at Spokane Arena.

"It was a really good game," said Tri-City coach Jim Hiller. "You don't come into this building without everyone pulling on the same rope. A lot of good stuff had to happen other than the big stuff. They laid it on the line."

Messier Sends Americans Past Chiefs 4-3

SPOKANE, WA - The ebb and flow of a hockey season can wreak havoc on a fan's emotions. Faced with their arch rival and four points away from clinching a third straight division title, the Tri-City Americans had their fans pounding the Tums®.

The Tri-City Americans (47-21-1-2, 97 pts), however, took the lead behind Jordan Messier's go-ahead goal with 7:37 remaining in regulation, then held off the potent Spokane Chief's (43-22-3-2, 91 pts) power play over the final 1:34 of the game to pick-up a 4-3 victory in front of 10,528 fans at Veterans Memorial Arena. With the win, the Americans picked up their second straight win and moved one step closer to finishing on top of the Western Conference pile. Meanwhile, the loss snapped Spokane's five-game winning streak vs. Tri-City and eliminated the Chiefs from contending for the 2010 U.S. Division title.

Kamloops Daily News: Western Conference waters awfully muddy

There are three nights and a total of 12 games left before the teams in the WHL's Western Conference will have wrapped up the regular season.

It may take until the end of the last one, which features the Spokane Chiefs at the Everett Silvertips on Sunday night, for the playoff picture to become clear.

Oh, we know which eight teams will appear in the Western Conference playoffs; we've known that for months, thanks to the uncompetitive nature of the rebuilding Seattle Thunderbirds (of Kent) and Prince George Cougars.

As a Saskatchewan farm boy, Kruise Reddick knows the value of hard work.

When it comes to playing hockey, Reddick parlayed that hard work into a roster spot with the Tri-City Americans.

"It all comes down to not giving up," said the 5-foot-9, 175-pound Reddick, who was listed by the Americans in July 2005. "My parents taught me that if it doesn't come your way, work harder and it eventually will."

Reddick, along with fellow forwards Johnny Lazo, Brendan Shinnimin and Mason Wilgosh and goaltender Drew Owsley all fall into the same category -- ignored in the Western Hockey League bantam draft because of their small stature.

The Seattle Thunderbirds had a chance to play spoiler Wednesday night, but Jordan Messier helped the Tri-City Americans remain in control of their playoff destiny.

Messier had two goals and Brendan Shinnimin added three assists as the Americans beat the Thunderbirds before an announced crowd of 6,025 at Toyota Center.

"Portland did us a little favor (beating Everett on Tuesday) and the ball is back in our court," Messier said. "We now have two against Spokane. It will be a big battle. I'm looking forward to it."
